Dr Roy Flechner awarded Visiting Fellowship at All Souls College Oxford
Dr Roy Flechner has been awarded a Visiting Fellowship at All Souls College Oxford in the autumn semester of 2021 to undertake research into the impact that different translations of the Bible had on the formation of early medieval law. Contradictory laws claiming to derive from the same biblical verses were not uncommon, and translators may deliberately have begged certain legal interpretations by choosing to depart from the literal sense of the Bible. A familiarity with the available range of Biblical translations is the foundation for studying the influence of the Bible on early medieval legislation: in order to ask 'what influence', one must first ask 'what Bible'? The project will propose some answers to this.
